The aim of the event is to exchange knowledge and innovations amongst African Lusophone countries on how to implement New Urban Agenda (NUA) using the National Urban Policies (NUP) as catalysers, adapting the Action Framework for the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda (AFINUA) to African Lusophone countries.
The five African Portuguese-speaking countries are Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe. Among them, three already formally started preparing a National Urban Policy and two are mobilizing resources for it. African Lusophone countries are connected not only by their recent colonial history and linguistic identity, but also by their similar legal and institutional framework with similar problems and challenges.
Although their urban and housing challenges differ in many ways i.e. according to urbanization, income and climate, there are many lessons than can be exchanged and build upon. African lusophone countries also have common interest to increase their unity in other to seize developmental opportunities and overcome challenges related to access to knowledge due to language barriers.
Cooperation amongst Lusophone countries is then key to transferring knowledge and lessons learned, and WUF is an opportunity in this regard.
The objectives of this event are:
Bring together international stakeholders to discuss the challenges faced by Lusophone countries to implement the NUA and to localize and achieve the SDG 11;
Foster technical cooperation on sustainable urban development between Lusophone countries and international actors.
Create a network of Lusophone stakeholders to exchange and produce knowledge on sustainable urban development tools, especially regarding the National Urban Policies.
Show case the ongoing examples of elaboration of National Urban Policies, based on the NUP-HCPD (Habitat Country Programme document) platform for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, based on the AFINUA.
