Summary

This session will bring together EU and LAC representatives to address forces, consequences and policy approaches to overcome socio-spatial fragmentation.

In Latin America, the public debate around urban spatial segregation typically focuses on socioeconomic issues, whereas in the EU the debate centers more on racial or ethnic disparities.

Directly supportive of the WUF agenda, the event provides a unique opportunity to introduce the guidelines and explore shared challenges, similarities and common views within countries in LAC and EU on spatial fragmentation and social segregation. The panel will bring together 3 LAC and 3 UE experiences.

It promotes an interactive debate with key actors involved in the making of inclusive policy and implementing the New Urban Agenda in a local/national/regional level. This involves ensuring greater engagement with communities and multilevel partnerships.

The interregional debate will formulate lessons to cross-fertilize the implementation of the new urban agenda focusing on three thematic areas: urban poverty, inclusion of vulnerable people and life quality.

The expected outcomes of this side event are:

- Building bridges between LAC and UE, by sharing experiences on socio-spatial fragmentation

- Involve key urban stakeholders to work towards an innovative governance approach

- Develop partnerships of urban actors that are jointly addressing major societal challenges.
