Summary

Role-playing is the changing of one's behavior to assume a role, either unconsciously to fill a social role, or consciously to act out an adopted role. The role play offers a space to test new ideas and presents an innovative methodology to address a specific challenge. The role-play methodology permits participants to experience, in person, challenges of group processes and to practice negotiation, common good alliances, trust building, networking, teamwork, and consensus building. FAMSI, as president of the uclg committee on local economic development, applies this powerful educational tool to bridge the wealth of local experiences with the achievement of the SDGs. For example, a challenge related to the SDGs is given to the attendees such as, how to tackle the environmental problems caused by mass-tourism. Then, each participant will be invited to assume the situation and make decisions throughout the game aimed at finding innovative solutions for the challenge. The game is organized into teams of five, with different groups playing simultaneously at the same time. Each group will propose, discuss and negotiate solutions to the proposed challenge. Once concluded, each group will present the negotiated agreement accepted by all participants. In the end of the game, a practical example will be presented. During the presentation the importance of the localization of the SDGs, as an opportunity for sustainable development at the local level will be highlighted.
